The Prevent Duty

With effect from 1st July 2015 the Counter Terrorism & Security Act gives  specified authorities  a legal duty to have “due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism”.

 

 THE ACT REQUIRES THE ABOVE TO:

  • Work in partnership to agree risk and coordinate activity
  • Incorporate the duty into existing policies so it becomes part of day to day work
  • Develop an action plan to address identified risks
  • Train frontline staff
  • Make appropriate referrals to safeguard people from extremism
  • Ensure that Council resources are not used to promote extremism
  • Incorporate other agencies working with children (e.g. school clubs and groups, supplementary schools) into our safeguarding arrangements

• Further Education

• The Health Sector

• Prisons & Probation

• Police

 

In Dudley prevent work has been undertaken through the Dudley Prevent Delivery Group since 2007. The group works to deliver the actions in our action plan, which is agreed annually based on the Counter Terrorism Local Profile produced by the Counter Terrorism Unit of West Mids Police.

 

CHANNEL

Individuals vulnerable to radicalisation can be referred into the “Channel” safeguarding process in order to prevent their being drawn into extremism. The below flowchart give more information about the referral process for use by colleagues concerned about any individual who they encounter.
