National hate crime awareness week

Dudley’s community safety partnership is promoting awareness of hate crime and encouraging people to report incidents as part of next week’s national hate crime awareness week (Oct 8 - 15).

Research suggests more than 80 per cent of hate crimes are not reported and the national week is set to tackle this by raising awareness, promoting support services and encouraging reporting.

Hate crimes may be targeted at a persons’ disability, gender, race, ethnicity or nationality, religion, faith or belief or their sexual orientation.

On Thursday (Oct 13) Dudley police along with Dudley’s Community Safety Team and partner agencies are holding an event to promote awareness of hate crime and the support services available in the borough.

The event is at the Summit House LGBT centre, Brindley House, North Street Dudley between 11am and 2pm and everyone is welcome to attend. Partner agencies will be there to provide useful information on their services and staff will be on hand to speak about hate crime.

In Dudley, safe & sound the community safety partnership has also developed a list of third party reporting centres to make it easier for victims to report incidents confidentially to people they trust.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for community safety, said:

“It’s really important that anyone affected by hate crime directly or indirectly knows there is help available from a number of organisations across the borough.

“Hate crime not only affects individuals but also families and communities and it’s really important that we tackle the issue together.

“No matter what the reason or cause, hate crime is not accepted in Dudley borough and the partnership will continue to work together to encourage reporting.”
